AeroPress Brewing Guide: An Easy Starting Recipe
Start upright with 16 g coffee and 200 g water in an AeroPress with suitable capacity. Stir briefly, steep for about 60 seconds and press gently, then taste and adjust.
AeroPress combines steeping with pressing the brew through a filter. Paper generally gives a clearer cup, while other filters can change texture. This is a simple upright starting recipe; the manufacturer’s filling and use instructions for your model take priority. Learning the inverted method is not required for a good first cup.
Starting recipe
| Coffee | 16 g |
|---|---|
| Water | 200 g, subject to capacity |
| Grind | Medium-fine |
| Temperature | 85–90°C starting range |
| Steep | About 60 sec |
| Pressing | Gentle and steady |
Equipment
- AeroPress and matching filter
- Sturdy, sufficiently wide mug
- Scale and timer
- Kettle and stirrer
Step by step
1. Secure the filter
Fit the filter and secure the cap properly. Place the brewer upright on a sturdy mug that fully supports its base.
2. Add coffee and water
Add 16 g coffee and 200 g water without exceeding capacity. Stir briefly and gently.
3. Let it steep
Fit the plunger as instructed and wait about 60 seconds. A small amount of dripping into the cup is not necessarily a fault.
4. Press gently
Apply gentle, steady pressure and do not force excessive resistance. Cool the hot filter cap safely and clean according to the instructions.
Short recipes can produce different cups
The input ratio here is 1:12.5, giving a relatively strong starting cup. Add a little hot water to taste if needed. Record brewing water and any serving water separately.
Model and filter differences
Do not assume models such as Go, Original and XL have identical capacity. With a metal filter or flow-control accessory, expect flow to differ and follow that component’s instructions.
Troubleshooting
| Plunger is difficult to move | Try slightly coarser grinding and check filter fitting rather than increasing force. |
|---|---|
| Drink is too strong | Add a little serving water first and record the result. |
| Sour or weak cup | Check full wetting; adjust only grind or steep time in the next brew. |
Frequently asked questions
Does it make espresso?
It can make a concentrated or espresso-style drink, but does not use the same pressure and method as an espresso machine.
Must I invert it?
No. This guide uses an upright position; follow manufacturer instructions, especially when starting.
Always 200 g water?
No. Capacity and target drink vary; do not exceed the device’s fill limit.
Choosing coffee
Start with House Blend and compare Ethiopia at the same measurements. A suitable grind and one-variable adjustments make differences easier to explore.
